“It is like love”

I’m reading Interview With the Vampire again after a long break and one thing that strikes me is how often Louis asks for people to slow down and be gentle. A lot of his resentment and anger for Lestat has to do with this specifically (and not, for example, that Lestat was a mythical monster who sucked his blood):

As I look back on this, I still despise him for it. Not because I was afraid, but because he might have drawn my attention to these changes with reverence. He might have calmed me and told me I might watch my death with the same fascination with which I had watched and felt the night. But he didn’t.

Lestat, had he any native intelligence, might have explained things to me patiently and gently–that I had no need to fear the swamps…

[I] resolved to go about it delicately and reverently, learning that from each thing which would take me best to another… Do you understand me when I say I did not wish to rush headlong into experience…? “ "Yes,” said the boy eagerly. “It sounds as if was like being in love.” The vampire’s eyes gleamed. "That’s correct. It is like love.”

Book Louis finds Lestat’s aggression particularly baffling and hard to cope with. He watches with longing as Lestat treats other people gently:

To these he was so gentle and polite that it made things far easier for me, who found myself hopelessly locked to him and jarred over and over by his viciousness.

Daniel, too, is often cautioned to slow down and take things in order.

In the show, Louis talks briefly about Lestat and Daniel and even Claudia going too fast. But what the book clarifies is how this is related to Louis’ sensory and dissociative experiences (e.g., being enchanted and overwhelmed), his desire to connect emotionally, and his moral feelings and anxieties.

I saw suddenly a possibility that I’d never considered before, a possibility from which I’d fled, rapt as I was with the world, fallen into the senses of the vampire, in love with color and shape and sound and singing and softness and infinite variation.

These other characters can definitely put on too much pressure, but I also think Louis is unusually thoughtful and deliberative. He ends up being judged as passive (or weak) when he directly asks for more time or consideration or details.
